About Shayne
Born and raised in Brantford, Ontario, Shayne attended Brantford Collegiate Institute & Vocational School. Yet, long before he could even think about his education (or future career path), Shayne was emersed in everything golf. Some would say he has been in the industry since birth as his dad has been a CPGA Professional for over 50 years. Consequently, Shayne has been carted around the golf course long before he can remember!
Shayne himself started in the business as a back shop employee in grade 6, moving up into pro shop sales when he was 15. He then moved on to join Mystic Golf Club in Ancaster, where he was a part of the construction and opening of the course. Ever since, Shayne hasn’t let go of his enthusiasm and joy for everything golf. During his time in Ancaster, he fell in love with the agronomy side of the industry.
Building on this love, Shayne took a job at the Hamilton Golf and Country Club, where he spent a total of 7 years. By working with one of the best superintendents in the industry, Rhod Trainor (and his talented assistants Tracy Fowler and Stu Bradshaw), Shayne was able to learn and grow as an individual, improving many of his skills. Shayne quickly became a key figure within the turf team in Hamilton – learning and developing his craft, falling in love with the design and reconstruction of the grounds, and being a part of the maintenance of the golf course. While working in Hamilton, Shayne also attended Rutgers University for two years and received his turf diploma in 2009 with a 4.0 GPA.
Keen to further expand his knowledge and skills, and ready to take on more responsibility, Shayne then moved on to become the Assistant Superintendent at The Bridges in Tillsonburg. Working at The Bridges, Shayne spent time under yet another great mentor, Brian Haum, who took him under his wing and quickly taught him everything he knew. In 2018, Shayne was promoted to Superintendent (a lifelong goal!) – where he remained for the last four years.
Expertly maintaining golf courses for years on end, it comes as no surprise that Shayne is most at home in the greens department. And so is his dog, Lola, who is basically employed at the golf course as well, as she spends just as much time there as Shayne does. You can usually find her chasing geese, rodents and treats throughout her days on the job. Over the years, golfers have fallen in love with Lola, often asking for her daily and putting a smile on faces wherever she goes.
When Shayne and Lola are not at the golf course, Shayne loves spending his time playing competitive sports – whether it’s AAA hockey, golf, or soccer! On his days off, you’ll find Shayne with his close friends and family camping, spending time at concerts, hiking, watching anything sports-related, or enjoying nights around a bonfire.
Day-To-Day Operations
Committed to excellence in golf course management and environmental responsibility, Shayne will spend his time at The Oxford Hills maintaining the course and managing the grounds crew. While weather conditions constantly change, Shayne is devoted to maintaining consistent playing conditions day after day. Ensuring The Oxford Hills is kept in peak playing condition and enabling golfers to enjoy a consistent playing field gives Shayne energy and satisfaction. His love for and understanding of golf, as well as his years of experience, make Shayne an outstanding superintendent for The Oxford Hills.
