With the first snowfall behind us, we invite you to celebrate the (start of the) festive season with us at The Oxford Hills. Soon, KALOS will officially open its doors, and we’ll be kicking off with different types of entertainment. Initial activities include an evening full of country music, our first Christmas Market, and our very own New Year’s Eve celebration! Here’s are some additional details on what our entertainment for November and December looks like:

MDM Unplugged

On Monday November 22, 2021, the winners of our social media photo contest (which ran from November 8 until November 14) will be enjoying an acoustic evening full of stories and country songs. This “win-to-get-in” event includes performances of the award-winning MDM Recordings roster, featuring country stars Jess Moskaluke, Don Amero, David James, Tyler Joe Miller & Five Roses.

A big thank you to everyone who participated in our online contest and helped make it a success! Christmas Market

We hope you’re ready for everything merry and bright… Sunday December 5, 2021, will be all about rediscovering the magic and romance of the holidays as we host our inaugural Christmas Market! Tickets are $10 plus HST, with $2 of each ticket sold being donated to the Fusion Youth Centre in Ingersoll, Ontario. This Christmas Market is our way to celebrate not only the season, but the wonderful businesses in our area. We’ve gathered some of Oxford County’s (and Southwestern Ontario’s) finest shops and food purveyors. Champagne & Pearls

December seems to be the gift that keeps on giving! Friday is always a good feeling, but the Friday the brand-new year starts? That’s something special. Reason enough for us to host a special Champagne & Pearls event on December 31, 2021. Join us for a 5-course meal, including live music, champagne toast, balloon drop and more! Construction Madness: The End Is Near!

We’re well into November, which means we’ve hit one year of solid construction. We’re the first to say that it wasn’t without any hiccups, but the first stage of completion is creeping closer and closer. Next week (hopefully) marks a milestone for restaurant KALOS in terms of its development as we await approvals on our occupancy permit, as well as health department approval to officially open the kitchen. Fingers crossed!

Here are a few things to note with regard to what this means in practice, as well as where things are at construction-wise:

Opening Our Doors

Pending approvals, we’ll officially open our restaurant and main venue at the end of November. At that time, KALOS will open at limited capacity and on a reservation-only basis. We request that guests make reservations through our website (our future reservation widget will be up and running closer to the end of November). To start, KALOS will be open Wednesday through Sunday from 4PM until 9PM. More information will follow soon. Please stay tuned!

Our first two official events at KALOS will be our Christmas Market (December 5, 2021) and our New Years Eve celebration, Champagne & Pearls (December 31, 2021). So, if you want to be a part of these first public gatherings and experience KALOS and our brand-new venue, be sure to get your tickets now! Progress

In the meantime, the entire team is working overtime to push the project along! Right now, 80% of the tiling on the main floor is done, and we expect tiling (on both the main floor and downstairs) to be completed by the end of November with some extra hours and elbow grease. The same is true for our elevator– with its delivery delayed due to material shortages – ultimately limiting us to upstairs occupancy only for now. 

Let’s move onto the happier news! The washrooms are complete, and with all kitchen equipment, silverware and plates delivered last week, the kitchen is fully operational (pending health department approvals). Despite the fact that our purchased ice-cream machine is currently MIA (please do let us know if you know its whereabouts), the open kitchen with bar seating offers a level of entertainment on its own. It provides an opportunity for guests to follow the steps taken to turn fresh, high-quality ingredients into each mouth-watering meal. Once KALOS is open, customers can follow along with chef Eric and his team as they fire up the grill, plate dishes and more! In line with this, the separate bar is essentially complete as well (apart from some tiling). The bar’s feature wall is done and a nice touch is the addition of lights which can change colours as we see fit!

Speaking of feature walls, in order to split the venue space and separate the open kitchen and bar area from a quieter dining or event space (including gorgeous view), a sliding wall has been installed around the double-sided fireplace. When closed, each individual space will have its own purpose, including cozy atmosphere.

Now, let’s skip to the outside portion of venue, because what would a venue be without its façade? From a design standpoint, the exterior face of the building has been an important talking point as it has set the tone for the rest of the building. The exterior is bound to grab one’s attention, as the stark contrast between the wood ceiling and dark-coloured stone can be seen from the road. As if the golf course didn’t provide a gorgeous enough backdrop for wedding pictures, now the venue does too. Even so, we’re still working on some final touches such as the installation of outdoor lighting fixtures, and the golf course’s garbage bins will likely be recycled and turned into flower pots and used on the patio to create more intimate seating areas. Also, for those who have asked and are wondering what those mysterious stairs outside lead to… it’s the best roof-top view in Oxford County! For safety reasons, the staircase will not be accessible to the public, so instead you’ll have to enjoy the view from the lower level and the pictures below!

In close proximity of the staircase, the first stage of the sewage tile bed has been installed. We’re currently waiting on approval from the ministry of environment to move onto the next stage, which is expected late winter or early spring. This will allow us to bring the future routing of green #9 into play.

Finally, the rest of the paving is scheduled for the last week of November. For the golfers among us it’s worth mentioning that we’re also working on cart paths and we’re hoping to get them paved yet this year! Additionally, owner Steve and general manager Mike are working on a potential warming up area for golfers. Please stay tuned as we iron out the details!

Restaurant Name Announcement

The month of September has been marked by our Name Our Restaurant contest, and our hearts have been full ever since! The support we received from our Oxford County community (and beyond) has been overwhelming, and has warmed our hearts. We received over 500 name ideas for our restaurant, and would like to thank all of those who submitted a suggestion, as well as those who helped us spread the word on our behalf.

We are thankful for all the support and couldn’t be more excited to share the name we’ve chosen. While it took some time, discussion, late-night back and forth emailing, restarting from scratch, and Googling, we are very happy to announce the team has collectively decided on:

KALOS

Read on to learn a bit more about the how, what, and why of picking the name, as well as the contest winner:

How We Picked The Name

Similar to our “Name Your Course contest”, we started by categorizing the submissions into broad themes to be able to make sense of all the suggestions. The categories ranged from animals to business names (references to The Oxford Hills or Theo’s), from food and restaurant specific names to geography, from golfing to views, and more.

With multiple people involved in picking the name, all reviewing the list of suggestions repeatedly, settling on a name liked by all wasn’t an easy task! It turned out none of the submitted names fully captured the essence of what we envision our restaurant to be. After exploring the options at hand and thinking outside the box, the team came to realize that the name should not only be unique, and a single word, it should also have a story and meaning behind it. And that’s how KALOS came about…

What Does It Mean?

KALOS not only represents the owner’s family (using the first letters of the immediate Bohner family names), it also means beautiful in Greek, and encompasses meanings equivalent to the English “good” and “noble”. Our restaurant is dedicated to good food, staff and atmosphere, and will without a doubt live up to its name!

We hope you’re as excited as we are to call KALOS your new favourite restaurant.

So Who Won The Contest?

But the $1,000 dining certificate question is… who won the contest if we didn’t select a name from the submissions? Invigorated by the support received, we entered all name ideas in a random drawing as a token of our appreciation.

Steve Bohner, owner of The Oxford Hills and KALOS, did the honours of blindly drawing the winner, using an online contest winner tool. As a result, we’d like to congratulate Geoff Scott for winning the $1,000 dining certificate to be used at our brand-new restaurant KALOS. We look forward to serving you soon!

In closing, we want to say thank you, once again, to all of those who took part in our contest. Stay tuned are we push towards the official opening of KALOS!

October Events at The Oxford Hills

Hello, fall! The cool air of autumn heralds a time of crunching leaves, unpredictable weather, favourite fall sweaters, soothing drinks, and so much more. While we’ll miss the grill season, and beautiful golf and outdoor patio weather, there are plenty of fun and diversified fall activities to look forward to at The Oxford Hills.

Our goal is to continue to provide safe entertainment, opportunities and notable experiences for our entire community. We’re committed to hosting events in a way that is safe and responsible, and in accordance with any laws and regulations.

Here is a bit more about our upcoming events:

Yoga By The Water, Wine & Dine

Let’s enjoy the outdoors a little while longer, before the real cold and snow comes! On Thursday October 7, 2021, our first Yoga, Wine & Dine event will take place from 4:45 p.m. until 8 p.m.! We welcome registrants to join us for a yoga session on the grass by the water, hosted by local yoga instructor Madizen Yoga. Upon arrival, guests will pick one of three dinner options, before setting up their yoga mat. Once everyone is set up, Maddie will start the 45-minute yoga flow session (from approximately 5:30 p.m. to 6:15 p.m.), and will help you become in tune with your breathing and embrace your body. Afterwards, guests will proceed to Theo’s for a wine-tasting. After enjoying a selection of white and red wine, and sparkling rose from 13th Street Winery, all participants will pick their favourite to enjoy with their pre-selected dinner option. Dinner will be served around 7 p.m.

Tickets cost $60 per person, and includes the yoga session, wine tasting, dinner with 6oz glass of wine, as well as tax and gratuity! Register now by purchasing your ticket online (first come, first served). Please note that social distancing guidelines will be implemented during this class, and a limited number of participants will be allowed (35 people max.). As the yoga session will be held outdoors, please dress appropriately (if necessary, adverse weather arrangements – such as a covered location – will be made).

We look forward to seeing you perform your favourite yoga pose, before sipping on your (glasses) of wine!

Career Fair

Saturday October 16, 2021, will be all about our Career Fair. If you have a passion for helping others, and want to be a part of our team, we invite you to come out for our first in-person job market. The event will be hosted at The Oxford Hills’ property, will run from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., and is free of charge! Some light refreshments will be available to attendees. Please bring a resume complete with cover letter. (The cover letter should feature a department of interest.) We’re looking for a variety of talent, including restaurant, event, and golf staff, as well as culinary professionals, and more! If you would like to take part in our Career Fair, please register here. Don’t forget to bring your best smile and be prepared for on-the-spot interviews!

Exclusive Guided Pre-Opening Tour

The day after our career fair, on Sunday October 17, 2021, we invite our members and prospective members to join us for a Guided Pre-Opening Tour of our main venue. While our space is not a 100% completed, this guided tour will provide an exclusive sneak peek into what’s about to come! This walk-in event will run from 11:00 a.m. until 4 p.m., and is for members and potential members only (2022 membership application forms will be available). Please note that social distancing and mask-wearing guidelines will be implemented, and a limited number of participants will be allowed (100 people max.). Interested? Please make sure you register in advance!

Almost Here: Your New Favourite Place

In our preceding construction update, we alluded to the fact that, due to challenges posed by the pandemic, our main venue is still under construction. Since then, lots of progress has been made. All windows and retractable glass doors have been installed, our feature fireplace and staircase are starting to take shape, fridges and freezers are operational, and the new practice green has been freshly sodded.

As the leaves start to fall and we transition to the cooler season, the team continues to push hard to be able to open this fall. Read on to learn more about our progress!

Festivities Labour Day Weekend

To enjoy the final days of summer in style, we invite you to celebrate your Labour Day Long Weekend at The Oxford Hills! Are you ready for a weekend full of pleasure, laughter and bliss? Our long-weekend festivities include something for everyone. Here’s what our entertainment for all ages and tastes looks like:

Nine & Dine – Friday September 3, 2021

Friday is always a good feeling, but the Friday before a long weekend? That’s something special. Reason enough for us to host a special Nine & Dine on Friday September 3, 2021! It’s a great way to enjoy both golf and dining – get in those nine holes and round out the evening with our chef’s plated-dinner features and live music from Dan Stewart (6 – 9 p.m.). And, don’t forget to stop by “The Oxford Hills lounge” at the top of the hill for some delicious shareables. Tee times start at 3 p.m. Registration can be done via email (to tyler.ma@theoxfordhills.ca) or in-person at the course. Golfers are recommended to book (or adjust) their tee times accordingly to allow them to join us on time for dinner.

Dine With Live Music – Saturday September 4, 2021

Because every long weekend deserves a celebration, The Oxford Hills will throw its own little dinner party on Saturday September 4, 2021. Join us for a delicious meal with live background music from duo PB & Jam (6 – 10 p.m.). On top of Theo’s regular menu options, our culinary team will carefully design an exclusive dinner feature for the evening. Dinner reservations will be available at 5 p.m., 6:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. (1.5hr seatings), and all three seatings will feature live music (starting at 6 p.m.). Family Day – Sunday September 5, 2021

Historically, Labour Day pays tribute to the contributions and achievements of labourers… and what better way to celebrate than by spending quality time with your family? Sunday equals fun day at The Oxford Hills! Come enjoy the game, get kids off their screens and on our greens, and finish the day with a delicious BBQ at Theo’s! Golfing together is not only fun, but also an excellent way to help kids develop coordination, estimate distances, and interact with gravity and physics! Fun detail: on Labour Day Sunday (September 5, 2021), juniors (under 12 years old) play for free with a paying adult after 2 p.m.! Please book your tee time as per usual (online or by calling 519-926-3040); our pro shop team will create a no charge option for the day to add kids for free after 2 p.m.

Theo’s: Live Music & Other News

August is here, and as the last official summer month slips away, the summer heat will slowly fade into a crisp autumn and summer outfits will get pushed to the back of the closet. But don’t fret! Instead of succumbing to the end of summer blues, it’s the perfect time to make the most of your remaining summer days and evenings – whether it’s playing golf, listening to live music or enjoying some delicious patio drinks and treats.

Our goal is to deliver safe entertainment for our entire community. Read on the learn more about our latest Theo’s activities and live music:

Theo’s Opening Hours & Menu

Our previous blog already provided details on some changes at Theo’s, including our hot kitchen opening hours and menu options. For those who missed it, here’s the gist of it: Theo’s hot kitchen is open to both public and members 6 days per week (Tuesday – Sunday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.). Beverages and cold nourishment options – such as pastries and chef-prepared sandwiches – are available daily (including Monday) starting at 7 a.m.

We have also expanded our menu with additional fine-dining dishes, as well as drinks (and updated some of the beverage pricing – offering something for everyone!). Please visit our website to view Theo’s menu ahead of time.

Live Music

Starting August 14, 2021, you’ll be able to start your weekend even better… not just with high-quality food and drinks at Theo’s, but also with live music from local musicians on some Friday and Saturday evenings!

A handful of you may have already experienced a sneak preview on Canada Day, when Jon Edwards performed live on our patio. We got the taste for more after his guitar play, vocals and other tunes… And so, we would like to welcome you for a delicious meal and drink, with in the background live music from The Grace San Andres Quartet on August 14, 2021 from 6 – 1o p.m.! Dinner reservations are required. Call The Oxford Hills for more information on seating times, and to book your table: 519-926-3040 (first-come, first-served). Good to know: we’ll be offering a “Special Plated Dinner” for the evening, in addition to Theo’s regular menu.

The Grace San Andres Quartet consists of Travis Baynham on guitar, Gary Jackson on Bass, Gop Intarachot on drums, and leader Grace San Andres on vocals. The band specializes in bringing the finest jazz, bossa, swing, mo-town, country, classic rock, and top 40 music. Fun fact: the band members met while working as music teachers at Woodstock Long & McQuade. In 2018, Grace had a lead on a wedding gig and suggested forming a band with the other teachers – ever since, the quartet has been performing together. In the past years, the Grace San Andres Quartet has been requested to perform locally in the Woodstock area, playing at weddings, festivals, restaurants and private events.

With the nice weather and golf season in full swing, we’re thrilled to announce our first set of post-lockdown activities! During our first months of operation, our goal is to continue to deliver safe entertainment for our great community—whether you golf or not! Here is a bit more about our upcoming (outdoor-only) events:

Canada Day Celebrations

With Canada Day just around the corner, we’d like to invite you to join us for dinner, live music and fireworks on Thursday July 1, 2021. Dinner reservations at Theo’s will be available at 5PM, 6:30PM and 8PM (UPDATE: our 6:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. seatings are SOLD OUT), for 1.5hr seatings, and all seatings will feature live music! Our Canada Day fireworks display will start around dusk (10PM), which means that only those with an 8 o’clock reservation will be able to stick around and enjoy our fireworks show. Golfers are recommended to book (or adjust) their tee times accordingly to allow them to join us on time for dinner.

With regard to our 8PM seating, guests have the choice to either book a table at Theo’s (dinner reservations only), or reserve a picnic (take-out) spot in the grass for groups up to 6 people. (UPDATE: our 8PM seating – both patio and picnic – is SOLD OUT). Only those seated at Theo’s will be able to order off our full menu. Those in a picnic (take-out) spot must bring their own lawn chairs and/or blankets, as no physical seating will be provided. Picnic areas will be clearly marked and groups are not to leave their “bubble”. A selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages will be available for purchase, as well as grilled hotdogs and hamburgers (no outside food or drinks allowed). Picnic spots will cost $10 per person, and include one (veggie) hamburger or hotdog, and one soft drink.

Member Tournament

A couple days after our Canada Day celebrations, on Sunday July 4, 2021, our first Member Tournament will take place. (Think of a day full of golf, delicious food, drinks, prizes and more!) This event is for members only, one of many to come, to express our gratitude for their continued support, trust, patience, and understanding, both before and during our opening. More information has been sent to members via email earlier this week.

Golf Leagues and Tournaments

Early July seems to be the gift that keeps on giving… Our men’s league (members only) will start on Wednesday July 7, 2021, and our ladies fun league (both public and members) will have its opening night on Tuesday July 6, 2021. Registration can be done via email (to tyler.ma@theoxfordhills.ca) or in-person at the course. Each individual league night will be filled with food, beer and wine specials!

Additionally, a range of golf tournaments are already in the books for August and September:

  • August 15, 2021 – Vuteq Golf Tournament
  • August 21, 2021 – Swing for Safety Charity Golf Tournament
  • August 28, 2021 – Kirwin Cares Century 21 Charity Golf Tournament
  • September 13, 2021 – London Senior Tour

While vaccination against COVID-19 is in full swing and restrictions are slowly getting lifted, we continue to promote healthy behaviours (such as social distancing, mask wearing and the like) that reduce the spread of the virus.

Book A Tee Time @ The Oxford Hills

Now that our doors are open to all – members, package holders, and the public – we want to make it as easy as possible for our visitors, members and their guests to play more golf and book their next round. Let us introduce Chronogolf – our online tee time booking tool. With Chronogolf, you can easily and instantly find and book a tee-time with any device.

Dependent on whether you’re a member or public player, here are some simple steps to get you started…

Members

  1. Click on the rectangular orange widget on our website (right bottom corner), or use the Chronogolf website (The steps below outline how to book using the widget on our website.)
  2. Click on the “Members” tab and log into your member account by entering your email and password.
  3. After logging in, click on “Member Tee-Sheet” to the right of your name to access the online tee-sheet. This will open your member dashboard.
  4. From the member dashboard, select “Book on Tee-Sheet”. The tee-sheet allows you to see who booked at what time during the next weeks as well as reserve your own tee-times.
  5. Select your date, tee time, and number of players. (Please note that depending on your membership type you can reserve a number of days in advance.)
  6. To include guests/play partners in your reservation, search their last name or choose them from your ‘buddy list’. 
  7. Now confirm your reservation. When you complete the reservation, you and your guests will receive a confirmation email with confirmation number, and you will see your booking on the tee sheet.

Additional tutorials on how to use Chronogolf as a member can be found on the Chronogolf support website.

Public

  1. Click on the rectangular orange widget on our website (right bottom corner), or use the Chronogolf website (The steps below outline how to book using the widget on our website.)
  2. Click on the “Visitors” tab and choose what date you would like to play.
  3. Next, simply follow the steps of the booking calendar (how many holes, how many players, player type, tee time). Where needed, click “Continue” to move onto the next step.

  5. After logging in/signing up, the page will display a summary of your booking details (including the exact amount that will be due when you arrive at The Oxford Hills). You’ll have to agree to the Terms and Conditions and Privacy Policy of Chronogolf at the bottom of the page before you can “Confirm Reservation”.

The Facts About Our Staggered Opening

As most of you will probably know by now, we officially opened our doors for member play this past Victoria Day long weekend (May 22, 2021)! Following all the excitement of our opening day and the recent announcement of the Government of Ontario and Premier Ford regarding the re-opening of golf courses, we’d like to reiterate that our opening plan at The Oxford Hills remains staggered:

First, members only. Then, multi-round package holders. Finally, the general public.

Why is it like this?

The timing of our staggered opening is the result of the government-mandated stay-at-home orders, as our operations and arrangements have been predetermined by the dates previously communicated by the Government of Ontario. In these times of uncertainty, where the pandemic continues to linger over us, we’re committed to being as transparent as possible and keep you in the loop as matters progress and restrictions lift.

That being said, our staggered opening allows for crowd management, and the delayed timing of our public opening is a function of the renovation of our course. We want to make sure foot traffic is limited to allow for social distancing, as well as ensure the course is able to flourish into its most optimal green and playing conditions. Right now, our members are playing a temporary, modified 18-hole golf course, as not all 18 holes are yet in play. The three holes that were designed and constructed last fall (holes 16 through 18) will be put into play as soon as possible. This will allow us to welcome more foot traffic and showcase a complete 18-hole golf course in excellent condition and with amenities.

What’s Next?

As alluded to (and communicated in our newsletter (sign-up here) and on social media), the first week of our operation (May 22, 2021 – May 29, 2021), we are welcoming members only. We are managing foot traffic on the course during this first week as a thank-you to our members for their patience and understanding as we continue to complete our renovations. While the playable holes are currently open to members, Theo’s – our temporary clubhouse/future halfway point – remains closed as we complete several final touches before opening this part of our establishment as well. Starting May 29th, 2021, we’ll welcome members’ guests and multi-round package holders to play golf at The Oxford Hills as well. Once all holes are put into play and Theo’s is up and running, we will also welcome the public. This is expected to be around July 1st, 2021. We will continue to carefully monitor the turf progress to ensure the greens are mature enough to withstand increased foot traffic and are looking forward to welcoming all visitors as soon as possible.

Tee-Time Booking

We’d like to remind you that pre-booked tee time reservations are required at all times (no walk-ins allowed). All timeslots are first-come, first-serve. Here’s how to book:

  • If you’re a member, tee times can be booked through our website (by using the “Book a Tee-Time” widget at the bottom of the screen) or by calling the clubhouse.

  • If you’re a package holder or public golfer, we invite you to please call in to book your tee time once we open our doors to you (website booking will be available soon).

COVID Questionnaire

Our top priority remains the health and safety of our staff, members, guests, and community. For that reason, all golfers must complete a COVID check-in form prior to entering our property at The Oxford Hills. The screening questionnaire can be accessed through our website. The questionnaire needs to be filled out every time one visits our property. The questionnaire can also be completed in-person at The Oxford Hills.
